Bulgaria has fulfilled its obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive to update the initial assessment of the state of the marine environment, the criteria for determining a good status in the marine environment, as well as the set of environmental objectives and the relevant indicators. This creates an opportunity to discontinue the infringement proceedings against Bulgaria under case C-510/20 before the Court of Justice of the European Union.

On 31st March 2022, the e-reporting to the European Environment Agency was completed. The first stage of developing the second Maritime Strategy of the Republic of Bulgaria for the period 2022 - 2027 was concluded with the reporting.

This reporting fulfilled the country’s commitment, thus remedying the infringement of EU law.

The update of the Marine Strategy was carried out on the basis of the results produced through a contract between the Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Enterprise for Management of Environmental Protection Activities, with the active assistance by the Black Sea Basin Directorate.
