Inspections for illegal discharges along the Black Sea coast to continue
07 Jun, 2024 | 14:36The Minister of Environment and Water Petar Dimitrov participated today in the sampling of marine waters in the area of the Shokarov Canal, carried out by the Regional Laboratory - Varna at the Executive Environment Agency within the two-day inspection of the quality of marine waters at the beginning of the summer season. During the inspection he was accompanied by the Director of the Black Sea Basin Directorate (BSBD) Yavor Dimitrov and the Directors of the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water and the Regional Health Inspectorate in Varna.
The rapid measurements in the area of the Shokarov Canal showed deviations from the quality standards for coastal marine waters. After the analysis of the results from the measurements it will become clear whether there are new illegal discharges of polluted water into the Shokarov Canal and prescriptions will be given to the Municipality of Varna to stop the pollution in the canal.
With a view to finding a long-term solution, Minister Petar Dimitrov got acquainted with the project for deep water discharge from the Shokarov Canal and the option for polluted water to go to the central sewer.
Experts from the Black Sea Basin Directorate and the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water - Varna continue to carry out inspections for illegal discharges of wastewater along the Black Sea coast, including along the Shokarov Canal and the beach in the area. The results of the surveys are expected in a few days and will be published on the official website of the Black Sea Basin Directorate.
The inspection by experts from the MOEW on the quality of coastal sea waters started yesterday jointly with representatives of the ministries of tourism and health and continues today, with a total of 20 points scheduled for sampling.
