Today is International Day for Biological Diversity. On this day, 196 international communities and member countries of the Convention on Biological Diversity call for daily efforts to protect biodiversity and its sustainable use.

This year's theme is "Be Part of the Plan" and is a call to action for all stakeholders to address the root causes of biodiversity loss, reduce direct pressures, promote sustainable use of its components and improve the status of biodiversity by implementing the Kunming-Monreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), also referred to as the Biodiversity Plan.

The practice started in December 2000 when 22 May was declared International Day for Biological Diversity. This is the day on which the UN adopted the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1992. Bulgaria ratified the Convention in February 1996 and has been a full member since 16 July 1996.

International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) was launched to raise public awareness, engagement and support. Parties are working to significantly reduce biodiversity loss globally, nationally and regionally, including by fighting poverty and improving the livelihoods of all life forms on Earth.

On 19 December 2023, marking the one-year anniversary of the adoption of the Kunming-Monreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity launched an awareness-raising campaign. The first phase of the campaign, "The Biodiversity Roadmap: For Life on Earth", includes a visual identity and public messages related to the promotion of the 4 strategic objectives of the framework to be achieved by 2050 and the 23 operational objectives to be achieved by 2030.

This year's International Day for Biological Diversity is expected to showcase the efforts of the global community in the run-up to the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16) to be held in Colombia from 21 October to 1 November 2024.
