Measurement data show a trend towards normalization of air quality indicators in the village of Gara Elin Pelin

On an hourly basis, the Ministry of Environment and Water receives data on air quality in the area of the village of Gara Elin Pelin after the fire erupted in the fireworks warehouse. At the moment, the measured air quality indicators do not give any grounds for concern about endangering the life and health of humans and animals in the region.

The Environment Executive Agency's mobile laboratory has been deployed for continuous monitoring in the village of Gara Elin Pelin, about 1 km from the warehouse - the nearest downwind safe settlement in the area where power is permitted and available, and will remain there as long as necessary.

To date, mobile laboratory data confirm that no exceeding values have been recorded of the hourly average standards for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone. There have also been no exceeding values of the eight-hour standard for carbon dioxide.

It should be recalled that according to preliminary data, elevated values of fine particulate matter (PM10) were recorded in the first hours after the fire occurred. The maximum measured value was at 4:00 after midnight - 128 micrograms/m3, and by 12 o'clock today the values had normalized to 12 mg/m3.

The data collected during the afternoon hours today for hourly fine particulate matter (PM10) concentration showed a trend of normalization: at 1 pm - 13 mg/m3, at 2 pm - 12 mg/m3, at 3 pm - 12 mg/m3, at 4 pm - 13 mg/m3, at 5 pm - 11 mg/m3.

The concentration standard for fine particulate matter (PM10) is a daily average of 50 micrograms/m3. All data for the 24-hour period are to be collected for a final assessment.

The mobile station will continue to monitor air quality in the area and provide updates.
