The results from the sea water sampling in the area of Kranevo are ready. The samples were taken during the joint inspections by the Black Sea Basin Directorate (BSBD) - Varna, the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water- Varna and the Regional Laboratory of the Environment Executive Agency in Varna.

The monitoring of the sea water in the area is related to an accident at the discharge collector of the Albena Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Extraordinary sampling was carried out on 21 June - two samples were taken from the Batova River (before and after the emergency discharge) and one from the coastal sea water upstream of its inlet. The results for the Batova River for all indicators showed no deviations from the standards for good status. The seawater sampling results indicate moderate status.

The Minister of Environment and Water Petar Dimitrov took part in the inspection on Saturday. He is in constant contact with the Ministry of Regional Development and reported that an emergency restoration of the collector for water treatment is necessary. A project for the repair and modernization of the wastewater treatment plant is planned in the amount of 13 million BGN, and another 8 million BGN are foreseen for the deep water discharge and the new collector. Funding is to be provided under the Environment Programme and the contract with Water Supply and Sewerage - Dobrich will be signed in July.

The director of the BSBD - Varna, eng. Yavor Dimitrov also took part in the inspection and added that the basin directorate will continue to monitor the quality of sea water in the area until the accident is solved.

On 22 June, coastal marine waters were re-sampled from two further points - off the “Casablanca” Bar and south of it in the area of the village of Kranevo. The results of the samples confirmed a moderate state of the marine waters. The results for biological oxygen demand (BOD5) are awaited.

Following the inspection by the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water- Varna on 20 June in connection with the emergency situation with the collector of the Albena WWTP, the governor of Dobrich convened a committee, which included a representative of the environmental inspectorate.
